5 days that lasted a lifetime… A counselor’s tale

Being a camp counselor was not something that ever crossed my mind. Joining Russian Camp MN earlier this summer was a spontaneous decision that turned into a transformative journey.

For kids it’s a week of fun and unforgettable overnight themed summer camp adventures. Disconnected from all the gadgets, completely immersing themselves into sports, music, arts, and nature, while creating lifetime friendships and memories that stay throughout the years.

For leaders it’s an opportunity to step into a role of mentorship for young campers, cultivating a fun summer experience that promotes creativity and curiosity, fosters kids’ confidence and independence, and creating lasting connections with both campers and fellow counselors.

I also had an opportunity to conduct a science workshop. Crafting a curriculum that presents science in an engaging and fun manner across all age groups, was a challenge I embraced with a mix of intimidation and enthusiasm. The experience proved to be as rewarding as it was demanding. Witnessing delight and sparks of curiosity in the eyes of younger children was truly captivating. But managing to tap into inquisitiveness and engage a group of teenagers into active participation, unveiled an afore dormant superpower – ability to motivate almost anyone – leading with humor and empathy.

Reflecting on this journey, I feel that I’ve always been a “camp counselor” at heart – naturally silly, unboundedly curious, passionate about delving into profound discussions, and with a high tolerance for chaos. This role made me feel so alive, so appreciated, so loved. While you strive to bolster their courage, confidence, and character, children reciprocate by fostering your own growth, allowing you to be the best version of yourself! It’s unclear who got more out of this experience, but I left the camp feeling whole. 5 days that lasted a lifetime…

I am overwhelmed with gratitude for this unexpected journey that compelled me to step outside of my comfort zone awakening something within me, and left me with cherished memories and a newfound sense of purpose and confidence.
